Chris Davenport Visits Mt Buller

24 July 2018

Internationally acclaimed skier, alpinist and adventurer Chris Davenport is visiting Mt Buller this week supporting the launch of Protect Our Winters in Australia.

Protect Our Winters – known as POW – is a movement driven by skiers like Davenport who care about winter and encourage positive change and education about climate.

The Australian chapter was launched this month by a small collective of people based at Mt Buller motivated to promote POW’s message of protecting winter. Lead Advocate of the group Josh Fletcher explains, “We are skiers and snowboarders who live and work in the mountains and love these special places. POW is a group of people who want to be able to enjoy alpine life and sports into the future and we need to make some changes if we want that to happen.”

Chris Davenport is a board member of POW International and has met with Buller Ski Lifts senior team, the Resort Management Board and Chamber representatives on his visit. Tonight he will speak at a community event in the Mt Buller cinema about the work of POW and how communities and resorts can mobilise to bring about changes for the betterment of the environment.

“It’s been a wonderful visit back to Australia and my first time skiing at Mt Buller. I’m impressed by the terrain here and by the awareness and commitment the community here has on this issue. I met with a great group of kids lucky enough to go to school up here on the mountain yesterday and it gives me hope when you hear their questions and see their enthusiasm to learn about our planet and get out and explore the world.”

“I’ve spent my life in ski resorts and it’s always interesting to learn and see how different places operate. Australia has such a unique and special alpine area it’s been great to connect with people and see the innovation and drive that the resort community has here to create a sustainable future,” said Davenport.

Davenport travels to Thredbo tomorrow to participate in more POW Australia events including a Hike for POW gathering up Mt Kosciuszko on Friday 27 July.
