First BIG SNOW is here!

27 May 2019

27 May 2019: The cold blast crossed Victoria last night delivering the first major snowfall of the season.  Approx 20cms of snow landed in the early hours of this morning with more light falls expected across today and another wave of snow on Tuesday.

The temperature is hovering as low as -4.5 on the mountain, creating ideal conditions for snowmaking.  Mt Buller has the snowguns on the main Bourke Street run operating for the first time this winter to add to the cover.  The official countdown is now on to opening of the season in just 12 days on Saturday 8 June.

The snow season officially opens on the Queen’s Birthday long weekend and Mt Buller guarantees skiing and snowboarding on Bourke Street from day 1 of the season, with a brand new 6-seater chairlift set to roll for the first time.  Mt Buller's commitment to snowmaking with two SnowFactories able to make snow at any temperature allows the resort to guarantee sliding on the Bourke Street ski run and the Village snowplay park for tobogganning from Opening Weekend.

In more good news for snowplay visitors the Snowplay park in the village has been extended and improved with graded slopes offering different gradients for sliding from gentle to thrilling!  Just like the ski slopes the toboggan hills are marked blue for beginners through to black for more extreme toboggannists!

The deep early snow fall has skiers and snowboarders excited for the winter ahead and Mt Buller is anticipating plenty of sightseeing visitors this week as snow lovers embrace the wintery transformation of the high country.

Workers in resort are racing to complete construction and renovation projects in resort ahead of the season with a new Kooroora Hotel in the final stages of construction ready to open for the opening weekend festivities.

Visitors this week coming to see the snow are advised to drive carefully and to the road conditions which are snowy and slippery. 4WD vehicles and suitable tyres are recommended.  The road is open to Mt Buller and a number of cafes are open for warm drinks and meals.

Mt Stirling is also open to 4WDs and will be a popular destination this week for cross country skiers eager to get amongst the tall mountain ash for the first snows of the winter.  Check the cams at Mt Stirling!
